Following the successful first phase of the 'Library of Cultivars' Project, Kevin started development of the Soil Imaging project in collaboration with Kanonkop Estate and with the guidance of specialists in the field of soil science. 

The objective was to develop a forensically accurate imaging methodology to produce greater than life-size, colour accurate, distortion corrected, stitched-mosaic image composites of soil profiles as well as ultra-high resolution, stacked macro images of soil components.

Numerous soil profiles have subsequently been documented using this method and the resulting interactive datasets are being used by several wine estates in the Stellenbosch area. See the gallery below for samples and please contact Kevin for more information.

The custom-built imaging rig supports capture resolutions of up to 5 times life-size. Lighting is controlled at capture and ensures both uniform illumination and a reduction of surface self-shadowing. This is particularly useful in profiles with rough or fragmented surface topography. 


COLOUR ACCURACY

Colour accurate lighting and colour-sync workflow ensure forensically accurate images.

Stitched images are corrected for optical and projection distortion. Scaling is sub-millimetre accurate.

Final composite images are life-size (accurate 100% scale) and are supplied both in image form and embedded in a custom pan, zoom and scan viewer application that is fully supported on desktop, laptop, tablet and smart phone devices.
